@lisa3876 I appreciate you so much for clearly that up. Twitter, FaceBook, Youtube, plus traffic you earned years ago. I like that and it really answer my question. I hate it when a blogger say stuff like great contents is what get you the traffic. I cling because it makes sense, but it doesn't get you 25,000 visitors per day. Great content will keep interested readers coming back, but it doesn't allow new people to find you. Your info is clear of rubbish, unlike others.

@NathanLee0921 This is one of those vids I wished I could re-do. The point was not to discuss traffic tips but to explain that some of the strategies I used back in 2000 are no longer relevant because so many people ask me what I did. But what's the point of talking about classified ad sites when they don't work anymore. As far as today, all I use is Twitter, Facebook, YouTube. And I'm still riding all the free search engine traffic I earned years ago. So there was nothing new to discuss. :)

No offense, but I think this video is off topic. You said you will discuss about your website's traffic, but all you did was talk about some history lessons. I like history. You said in a video that all your website have about 20,000 visitors per day as of now. Can you create a video and explain more about how you accomplish this? I already know that you get traffic from twitter, but that's not enough. And your website(s) rank high in search engine for competitive keywords, but what else?

Google's AdWords is also a good way to drive traffic to your site, provided you got some good keywords and some dough to invest. Nothing in life is easy. The best lesson I have ever learned in life is that it takes money to make money, and if you do your homework and put in the work, eventually you'll reach your goals. Hi Lisa, I've been following for a while. Love the videos - very useful! While you say this is a brand new niche for you, my problem is when you say you are starting all over from scratch.You are not at the same "level" as you were in 2005. Secondly, you have built a relationship and developed trust and loyalty with your subscribers and that is to me THE major key in being successful in any niche. I had an insight that helped me to come up with a topic for my online website. What I did was pretended, if money is no object, what type of business would you do "offline"? and the answer to that gave me an idea of a topic for the online website. For e.g if you would have a meditation center then your website might discuss meditation tools. Sometimes you have to reframe the question(what do I want?) That helped me.

@richlamarkev Interesting point of view, but I STILL believe that no matter what you look like people want GOOD content. So middle aged, young, old, etc. I'd still say, find a niche you're passionate about, research demand, develop a unique angle (very important) and provide HELPFUL content. The strategy remains the same no matter what you look like. :)

Source code position has been a point of contention for many years, as I'm sure you know, but you did a great job explaining the difference between top tier and long tail strategies. i.e. on-page factors are more important for long tail sub pages than a homepage or sub section. People don't get this sometimes and write off that tactic altogether thinking that it's just more SEO superstition. It's not. It does help if you're not competing in cut-throat SERPs. Age and links help more, though :)

Well one thing that we know for sure is that the first 250 or so words (that the search engines see) are the most important for relevance sake so you are onto something Lisa....coding things this way the googlebot will see your heading and most important page content first. great video

The social media is a very common mistake, and consumes a lot of precious time. Great Alert. You could also have mentioned how much the blog was bought for. Also some technical details on the transfer would not either hurt. Same host, or another host, exported database. I never guest posted. I may need some help on that. Lisa many many thanks. A majority of people fail using AdSense simply because they don't market it well, don't understand how and why it works, or how to integrate it into their website and their LIVES. You really have to WORK AT IT to MAKE it WORK. When you set up a website or try to make a living from YouTube, that in itself is a fulltime JOB. I used to run an apartment finding service on Craigslist a year ago and when my customers didnt get an apartment from my service or didnt qualify or had bad credit, they blamed it all on me and said I was a scam website and badmouthed me on the internet even though i was nice enough to refund their 49.95 even though I did nothing wrong and also have a legal disclaimer and terms of use they agreed to before purchasing my service.

As the internet is changing and their are new platforms such as squidoo and social media, I have read that many people are not visiting websites as much UNLESS you're on first page of google search. Additionally communities such as at Squidoo dot com have groups of people who are loyal and the company itself helps to promote you. Hi Lisa, I understand your POV about blogs but I think that the problem is that not many people know how to use blogs Properly! I mean, people need to FIRST learn how to use the wordpress or their blogging platform. Blogs can be structured just like static websites and in fact, tutorials can be placed on Pages rather than Blog posts which is what WP recommends in their wiki (ran out of space... agrr sorry)

I think it's interesting that people call one thing blog and the static part a website. Everything is a website. A blog is just a website with a news script and comment feature. I know what you mean, and I couldn't think of a different word myself to describe a "classic website" rather than just "website". This is exactly what I needed to know right now. I am 63 yrs old and live in the Missouri Ozarks area. Very few families even have a computer, much less want to get an online presence. However, there are enough older people who do want to at least make contact with their children and grandchildren that I think I can make a modest living teaching them how to set up a blog, twitter, and facebook. One more thing... Only one bit of advice: lighting. I've gone to Wal-mart to pick up two "Daylight" rated (5500K) lightlbulbs $5 each and two Bayco clamp lights $7 to hold them in then attached them to whatever is handy nearby (a chair, filing cabinet, etc.) & angled them right and left on me...made a HUGE difference. There's just NEVER enough lighting with consumer camcorders :( although Sony's better than most. Enjoy your new adventures in editing! :) Deborah

Lisa is 100% right. I had 20k followers/following. Absolutely useless! I recently un-followed everyone except those I'm interested in. I focus more on listening and building REAL relationships. What a difference in results! We often forget the "social" in social media and treat it like a video game score. I think the best is yet to come for Twitter. They are cleaning up the spam and adding new features every day. Besides, its still the best social platform out there in this mobile age.

Agree 100% but it's still a decent way to get an idea for a site's traffic and especially for comparing apples to apples. PageRank and Alexa are certainly not the best barometers for a site's success. That's why I also talked about Ryan's specific traffic numbers.

guess he proved me wrong by being open about his background, went to his site and got some clarification on this. something tells me the niche has a lot to do with how successful a young person can be while giving advice. a very technical niche where the audience themselves comes from various backgrounds and has a high level of interest for information instead of seeing their peers- this is probably where one can be different and not isolate part of it's audience. very helpful vid.

Great tips!!, I use a USB wiiresless keyboard which sits on my lap. A wireless mouse which I regularly switch from left hand to right hand and back (switch the mouse buttons in control panel so the index finger of each hand is on the regular click button) and I have started blowing a fan to keep the fumes from the PC out of my breathing space and keeping the room ventilated. And take a whole day off without any computer

Wow, great video! I know I have a big problem with slouching, but I didn't realize that my desktop keyboard was too high. I type with those "claws" all the time. Lisa, I know exactly what you are going through. I'm currently experiencing tendinitis and can only work for short periods of time. Trying to keep up two websites, plus finish a crochet design pattern are not the easiest things to accomplish when I'm having pain. Thanks for the advice.

I have a question? I'm trying to get my website on google. I submitted my web site to google but i haven't got a response or anything and this is the 2nd time I have Tried. Is there something I should be doing to get my website on google. this would be a big help from anyone because I just spent money on a domain name and hosting...I dont want it to go to waste.

Hello, Lisa. it always seems to just take time... and a lot of work... From the few people I've polled who are "successful" and new to blogging... by "successful" I mean they USUALLY are earning like 1 to 300 bucks a month (at most) after about 6 months of aggressive blogging/adsense. Sometimes it takes a year to hit that amount. After about 3 years, of aggressive web work they MAY be in the 500 to 1000 a month range. Depends on commitment and skill(s)... (luck sometimes).

Yes, Google favors the popular sites, but their job is to point people to the best info available. If they don't, they lose traffic. It's kind of a Catch 22. As Lisa has said, time and again, bring value to the content of your site then start promoting in the right places. It all takes time but it works. And thanks, Lisa! Backlinks from quality, relevant sites, using anchor text related to the keywords you want to rank for....also, what people should do is make sure they have good internal link structure to put emphasis on their most important pages. Get targeted backlinks to deep pages instead of always getting links to the homepage...and you can rank for multiple keywords. Also if people don't add content pages to their sites their PR will go down eventually b/c the internet is growing.

Another good vid Lisa. I found using Article Directories to gain some backlinks is a great option. EzineArticles or Buzzle are the ones I use. Actually, I think you taught me that :)

It's not just about the PageRank. My PageRank dropped 2 years ago but my traffic from Google increased. I understand your frustrations but there are GAZILLIONS of sites fighting for traffic so Google has to figure a formula to determine which ones deserve top billing. And if you think about it, link popularity is really the best way. If they left it up to onpage criteria only, it would get abused by crappy sites that don't deserve a rank. Hang in there, OK? It's worth the hard work. :)

Im one of those who applied adsense way too soon but luckily Im not really bothered about my cents earnings at this moment from adsense & still in the process of learning how to market my blog correctly & adding original content if not daily 3 times a week. @Pinky2D4 I agree and that's what I did too. Unfortunately most people don't. They build 5 pages and then frantically check their earnings every hour and suddenly forget this is about building a long-term business that takes time. Maybe blocking them is not the answer. Perhaps Google should work harder at EDUCATING people about how to do it effectively. After all, that would help their bottom line too.

Hi Lisa, I agree somewhat, but I think that the person's focus must change and not just the adsense terms to block those who are not building knowledge of marketing itself. What I am doing is integrating adsense INTO my content as I go along. This way the content can be marketed fully. I will have more time to promote once the content is there. I'm interlinking and using affiliate links also. It's double the work to go back to just add adsense. Just another angle to consider. Pinky

I think a requirement of around 100 visitors a day would be a fair move for google to implement. Many people who are building crummy websites today, thinking that they will make it rich online will be forced to either improve their site or find another career. This would then clean up the internet somewhat. Oh and about the office background, I think it was real, however I could never figure out why someone who made all their money online would have a pair of scissors on their desk. Hmphh?

I started a site through SBi in May and was averaging 20 uniques/day. I followed the AC and wrote content and waited for their 30page/30visitor rule before joining Adsense.... THEN - the July 4th weekend came around and Thursday I had 400 uniques, Friday:1600, Saturday 2600- I thought I made it and rushed to put adsense on my pages.
