@AYWalton I said "not affiliated" Big difference from "not related." What I mean is that WordPress doesn't work alongside Thesis....meaning they aren't checking to make sure their updates comply with the Thesis theme (or any theme for that matter) It's up to the theme creator to make sure their theme is compatible. When you have a paid theme with free updates, many designers make sure their theme stays compatible. Settle down. :)

Say what? Thesis and WordPress are not connected??? Gracious!!! Still have no idea why my web host insisted that I have a WordPress blog for my podcast site, and I have a Thesis theme. I really don't like either, but after a year I really have no choice, and oh well---the things you learn!! Not related, huh? You wrote an enthusiastic post about a year ago about how you loved Thesis but never pointed out that it was not related to WordPress. Wow.

@jrrowntree You either use one or the other. Thesis created a nav long before WordPress. Now WP has one. Version 1.8 just allows you to style your WordPress menu using the menu/control panel instead of getting into the code. But if you already use the Thesis nav, no reason to use a WP nav. That's why I don't use it.

Hey Lisa, I was going to send you a detail explanation on using htaccess but I see that there are dozens of videos here that already do that. I like the fact that everything is in just one file. The only drawback to that is if you make a mistake on just one line the whole file is dead, so you have to double and triple check everything before you upload it. Take Care, Grandpa Bill

Hi Lisa, to be honest, I like the meta refresh methode the least out of the 3 ways I know. 1) Meta Refresh (your way) 2) .htaccess redirect 3) PHP redirect using header(); I don't like the Meta refresh mainly cause it happens that some Security programs, add filters etc. block zero seconds meta refresh. I also noticed that sometimes, for what ever reason, the meta refresh is just stuck. Using a simple PHP file with header(yoururl); works best in my experience, plus you can track the hits :)

So middle aged, young, old, etc. I'd still say, find a niche you're passionate about, research demand, develop a unique angle (very important) and provide HELPFUL content. Source code position has been a point of contention for many years, as I'm sure you know, but you did a great job explaining the difference between top tier and long tail strategies. i.e. on-page factors are more important for long tail sub pages than a homepage or sub section. People don't get this sometimes and write off that tactic altogether thinking that it's just more SEO superstition. It's not. It does help if you're not competing in cut-throat SERPs. Age and links help more, though :)

A majority of people fail using AdSense simply because they don't market it well, don't understand how and why it works, or how to integrate it into their website and their LIVES. You really have to WORK AT IT to MAKE it WORK. When you set up a website or try to make a living from YouTube, that in itself is a fulltime JOB. Rightt: Think about your content. As the internet is changing and their are new platforms such as squidoo and social media, I have read that many people are not visiting websites as much UNLESS you're on first page of google search. Additionally communities such as at Squidoo dot com have groups of people who are loyal and the company itself helps to promote you. Overtime I think unless you have a fantastic website people will look elsewhere for information:i.e Wiki, Squidoo etc.

Hi Lisa, I understand your POV about blogs but I think that the problem is that not many people know how to use blogs Properly! I mean, people need to FIRST learn how to use the wordpress or their blogging platform. Blogs can be structured just like static websites and in fact, tutorials can be placed on Pages rather than Blog posts which is what WP recommends in their wiki (ran out of space... agrr sorry)

I think it's interesting that people call one thing blog and the static part a website. Everything is a website. A blog is just a website with a news script and comment feature. I know what you mean, and I couldn't think of a different word myself to describe a "classic website" rather than just "website". Someone should come up with a new word to describe the good old "classic websites".

This is exactly what I needed to know right now. I am 63 yrs old and live in the Missouri Ozarks area. Very few families even have a computer, much less want to get an online presence. However, there are enough older people who do want to at least make contact with their children and grandchildren that I think I can make a modest living teaching them how to set up a blog, twitter, and facebook. One more thing... Only one bit of advice: lighting. I've gone to Wal-mart to pick up two "Daylight" rated (5500K) lightlbulbs $5 each and two Bayco clamp lights $7 to hold them in then attached them to whatever is handy nearby (a chair, filing cabinet, etc.) & angled them right and left on me...made a HUGE difference. There's just NEVER enough lighting with consumer camcorders :( although Sony's better than most. Enjoy your new adventures in editing! :) Deborah

I also had a similar experience & then switched to a Mac with iMovie & Garageband and have never looked back! I'm sure everyone has their own opinion, bur for ease of use "out of the box" it's been a Godsend. It's built for fast editing of web video and that's you, soooo... :)

You are right. In Colorado higher taxes has created less incentive for business to operate here. As a Colorado resident I have seen my state go from prosperity to poverty. The way to prosperity is less government intrusion and less government intervention. Lower taxes and less entitlement programs. Greater freedom to the private sector and the free market system. Lisa is 100% right. I had 20k followers/following. Absolutely useless! I recently un-followed everyone except those I'm interested in. I focus more on listening and building REAL relationships. What a difference in results! We often forget the "social" in social media and treat it like a video game score. I think the best is yet to come for Twitter. They are cleaning up the spam and adding new features every day. Besides, its still the best social platform out there in this mobile age.

Lisa has really helped me alot with my site. I went from 3 hits a day to about 30 in less then a week. The Green market is pretty good but it takes a while to get noticed but you are already noticed so it should work out good for you.

3876, if and when you make your DVD's include one DVD that's soley dedicated to case studies. Case studies are invaluable! For example I go to the featured website to study and analyze the pro/cons of said site while wearing headphones & listening to you talk about them & their site. Case studies are a great learning tool & a powerful motivator note other Youtubers have said the same thing. Agree 100% but it's still a decent way to get an idea for a site's traffic and especially for comparing apples to apples. PageRank and Alexa are certainly not the best barometers for a site's success. That's why I also talked about Ryan's specific traffic numbers.

guess he proved me wrong by being open about his background, went to his site and got some clarification on this. something tells me the niche has a lot to do with how successful a young person can be while giving advice. a very technical niche where the audience themselves comes from various backgrounds and has a high level of interest for information instead of seeing their peers- this is probably where one can be different and not isolate part of it's audience. very helpful vid.

Great tips!!, I use a USB wiiresless keyboard which sits on my lap. A wireless mouse which I regularly switch from left hand to right hand and back (switch the mouse buttons in control panel so the index finger of each hand is on the regular click button) and I have started blowing a fan to keep the fumes from the PC out of my breathing space and keeping the room ventilated. And take a whole day off without any computer

Wow, great video! I know I have a big problem with slouching, but I didn't realize that my desktop keyboard was too high. I type with those "claws" all the time. Also, great suggestion about drinking a gallon of water every day, cause hey, if you drink that much water, then you'll automatically be taking a break every few minutes just to pee! :)

Lisa, I know exactly what you are going through. I'm currently experiencing tendinitis and can only work for short periods of time. Trying to keep up two websites, plus finish a crochet design pattern are not the easiest things to accomplish when I'm having pain. Thanks for the advice.

From the few people I've polled who are "successful" and new to blogging... by "successful" I mean they USUALLY are earning like 1 to 300 bucks a month (at most) after about 6 months of aggressive blogging/adsense. Sometimes it takes a year to hit that amount. After about 3 years, of aggressive web work they MAY be in the 500 to 1000 a month range. Depends on commitment and skill(s)... (luck sometimes).

Youtube marked 1 of my clips as a Featured video. They have advertisements from AmazonMp3 imbedded in my video and on the side of it fire house subs or a college ad. How can I make some change off my own video? Whos making the money now off of it? The ads look just like urs imbedded and off to the right side. I know ur busy but u seem like one of the cool people on the web that is willing to help us newbies out. I have other vids around 14,000 views. Not on this channel.

Thanks, Lisa. Your video just confirms what I've suspected all along. If you're going to feature links on your site, it's better to find quality sites relevant to your content than to engage in link exchanging. I want more links to my site, but in order to get that I have to work on my content.

I sure do when the site has great quality. That's what I'm trying to emphasize in this video. When you create a quality site people will link to you voluntarily without requiring a link exchange. I link to a lot of sites for free (no affiliation) when I feel they are valuable to my audience.

I'm no expert but it seems if you aren't getting links to your site it's either because your content needs work or people need to find it. Yes, Google favors the popular sites, but their job is to point people to the best info available. If they don't, they lose traffic. It's kind of a Catch 22. As Lisa has said, time and again, bring value to the content of your site then start promoting in the right places. It all takes time but it works. And thanks, Lisa! I learn a bit more with every video.

Backlinks from quality, relevant sites, using anchor text related to the keywords you want to rank for....also, what people should do is make sure they have good internal link structure to put emphasis on their most important pages. Get targeted backlinks to deep pages instead of always getting links to the homepage...and you can rank for multiple keywords. Also if people don't add content pages to their sites their PR will go down eventually b/c the internet is growing.

I agree with you. I have a couple blogs that I update regularly. It is difficult to attain TRUE links to my blogs. I despise link exchanges because I want real quality.

It's not just about the PageRank. My PageRank dropped 2 years ago but my traffic from Google increased. I understand your frustrations but there are GAZILLIONS of sites fighting for traffic so Google has to figure a formula to determine which ones deserve top billing. And if you think about it, link popularity is really the best way. If they left it up to onpage criteria only, it would get abused by crappy sites that don't deserve a rank. Hang in there, OK? It's worth the hard work. :)
